Sophy Burnham:

·        Former executive director of the Kennedy Center Fund for New American Plays, she worked closely for five years with famed Broadway producer Roger Stevens, giving money to theaters to produce new plays and to playwrights to write them. 

·        Helen Hayes Theater Awards Judge, Washington, D. C.

·        Founding member of the D. C. Humanities Council, the regranting arm of The National Endowment for the Humanities.

·        Founding member, The Studio Theatre, Washington, DC                                    


 

                                                              Theater Plays:.

She is now working on a new play, CHRISTINA   

  Penelope, the story of The Odyssey from Penelope’s point of view
   Three act classical Greek tragedy

                 

·        grant from the prestigious Office of Advanced Drama Research at the University of Minnesota,

            ·        the Episcopal Drama Award for Best Play,  Publication.
            ·        Seattle Theater’s Best Women’s Play Award.
            ·        readings at George Washington Marvin Center and at The American Place Theater in New York,
            ·        produced at New Playwrights’ Theater and on Pacifica Radio, starring Joy Zinoman
                   (now Artistic and Managing Director of The Studio Theatre, Washington, DC.
 

The Study (renamed Snowstorms):

Two act modern play:  3 grown children learn the secrets of their parents lives.

           ·        Playwrights Forum, Washington, DC
           ·        Perseverance Theater, Juneau, AL
           ·        The Cosmos Club, Washington DC
           ·        staged reading at the Charlotte, N.C., Festival of New Plays
           ·        the Virginia Duvall  Mann Award.  
 

Prometheus, a translation & adaptation of Aeschylus’ Prometheus Bound together with a modern  reimagining of the lost conclusion, Prometheus Released.
 
            ·        Produced at The Studio Theatre, Washington, DC., directed by Joy Zinoman.
            ·        Helen Hayes Award nomination, for dance           
   The Meaning of Life : 15 minute play
 
            ·        Arena Stage, Washington DC. Workshop  
            ·        finalist at the Turnip Theatre Festival, American Globe Theater, New York.   
 
                                                             Radio Plays
 
   Several plays produced on National Public Radio’s Children’s  Radio Theater, including:
 
           ·        The Witch’s Tale, recipient of the Best Children’s Radio Play Award from the National Association
                  of Community Broadcasters
           ·        Beauty and the Beast, and 
           ·        The Emperor’s Nightingale  also staged at the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC
