The Landed Gentry

This was my second non-fiction book, about class and wealth in American and how the inherited wealth influences personality and character. It was sort of a personal psychotherapy and was so terrifying to write that I wrote a play and two children's novels to avoid it.

One morning I woke up with the absolutely certain knowledge that it was all right to finish it, that it wouldn't be another best-seller. No one would read the book who wasn't supposed to. And in a few months I finished the book. It came out to rave reviews and then... a flood in the warehouse destroyed most of the books. No one could buy it. I was really happy.

Even so, my parents were un-invited to one dinner party. I was called a "traitor to my class." And to my sorrow lost one friend. All that was long ago. It blew over. Few people remember this book anymore, but it holds up well. I'm pleased with it.
