The Art Crowd

This was my first book, about the contemporary art world and how five groups --dealers, critics, museums, auctions and collectors, each working for its own benefit, combine to determine the big question: What is Art?

It's out of date in details but unfortunately still holds as far as the business is concerned.
The book was so hard to write that when it was done I made an pronouncement to God, that "If this book is not a success, I'm never writing another!" Then it didn't get published and didn't come out and didn't come out ... I gave up all hope. But the week it was published The New York Times wrote a front-page story of a scandal at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and there was The Art Crowd in all the book store windows. It created a storm, earning one of my favorite reviews -- from Newsweek -- calling me a "troglodyte Philistine." The book was a best-seller. So I had to write more.
